Short version: this app has no accounts, no analytics, no advertising, and no tracking. The only thing it can store about you is a notification token, and only if you turn notifications on.
Your location never leaves your device. It is used on your phone to sort viewpoints by distance, and it is not transmitted to us or to anyone else.
What the app collects
- A notification token, only if you allow notifications. If you grant permission, your device is issued an anonymous push token, which we store so the server can send you an alert when Mount Rainier becomes visible or when the evening light is forecast to be good. The token identifies a device for delivery purposes only. It is not linked to your name, email, phone number, or any account, because the app has none of those.
- Ordinary network information. When the app loads the forecast, it makes a standard web request to our server, which is operated on Cloudflare. As with any web request, that includes your device's IP address. We do not use it to build a profile, and we do not combine it with anything else.
What the app does not collect
- No account, sign-in, name, or email address.
- No location data. Location is optional and is requested in two places: tapping "Use my location" on the Now screen, which chooses which part of the Puget Sound area the reading is for, and tapping "Distances from me" on Spots, which sorts viewpoints by distance. Both are calculated on your device and never sent to us.
- No analytics or measurement SDKs, no advertising identifiers, no third-party trackers.
- No contacts, photos, calendar, health data, or files.
Anything saved on your phone
If you use the observation buttons to record what you actually see out the window, those entries are stored on your device only. They are never uploaded. Clearing them, or deleting the app, removes them.
Who we share it with
Nobody. We do not sell, rent, or trade data, and there are no advertising or analytics partners. Three service providers process data purely to make the app work: Cloudflare hosts the server, Expo operates the push notification delivery service that relays alerts to Apple and Google, and Mapbox supplies the 3D map.
The 3D map only contacts Mapbox when you open it. Mapbox then receives your IP address and an anonymous device identifier, which it uses to deliver map tiles and to count monthly users for billing. It does not receive your location. Mapbox's own usage telemetry is turned off in this app.
Where the weather comes from
Observations and forecasts are read from public sources: aviation weather reports from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the forecast model published by MET Norway under CC BY 4.0, and NOAA air-quality guidance for wildfire smoke. Requesting that data sends nothing about you.
Turning it off, and deletion
Turn notifications off for this app in your device settings and no further alerts are sent. To have your stored notification token deleted, email mountains@milecheckapp.com and it will be removed. Deleting the app also stops all data collection.
Children
This app is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect information from them.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it, and the current version always lives at this address.
